Servers
Typical server hardware that I use are Dell R630’s with 128GB RAM, 40 cores, 8TB storage from Amazon renewed (at approximately $450 each as of this writing). I started with Raspberry Pis, graga-sale systems, and cheap micro-itx systems off of E-Bay. Power-wise, and space-wise the Del servers are for more efficient in the long run. Noise, on the other hand, not so much.
Storage
I tend to use what-ever 2U option with 16 or more drives that I can get on Amazon Renewed for cheap. I am currently using an IBM option that does the job well.
Routers, Switches, and APs
I use gigabit Mikrotik hardware or similar due to them being very affordable yet also extremely capable - better than standard residential equipment. That, and I have become very familiar with the OS.
Cabling
I generally use Cat5E for most of my lab, with occasional DAC cables to strap the routers to the switches and also to connect my storage servers. Fiber between buildings or for longer runs that go outside - and also for my internet.
Toys
Things that just make life interesting and/or are just too cool not to play with. I moved this entry to its own folder now, because it will grow… alot. Checkout my index.
